Operation Sindoor: A Surge in India–Pakistan Hostilities
Tensions between India and Pakistan have sharply escalated following a series of military operations and retaliatory strikes.
Indian Strikes: Operation Sindoor
In the early hours of May 7, 2025, India initiated “Operation Sindoor,” a coordinated military campaign targeting nine sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The operation aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure linked to groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which were allegedly responsible for the April 22 attack in Pahalgam that resulted in 26 civilian deaths. The Indian Armed Forces employed precision-guided munitions, including SCALP missiles, AASM Hammer bombs, and SkyStriker loitering munitions, to execute the strikes without entering Pakistani airspace.
Pakistan’s Retaliation
In response, Pakistan launched a series of missile and drone attacks targeting Indian military installations in Jammu, Udhampur, and Pathankot. India’s S-400 air defense system successfully intercepted these projectiles. Simultaneously, Pakistan reported downing multiple Indian aircraft and drones, claiming to have inflicted significant casualties.
Civilian Impact and Diplomatic Strain
The ongoing hostilities have led to civilian casualties on both sides. Pakistan reported 31 civilian deaths due to Indian missile strikes, while India confirmed 16 fatalities from Pakistani shelling in Jammu and Kashmir. Both nations have imposed blackouts and heightened security measures, including suspending flights and restricting social media access.
International leaders have expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict. The United States, through Secretary of State Marco Rubio, has urged both countries to de-escalate tensions and engage in dialogue to prevent further violence.
